Optimal Design of Novel Blade Profile for Savonius Wind Turbines

Since the affirming of global warming, most wind energy projects have focused on large-scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs). In recent years, fast-growing sector and demand for smarter grids led to use Vertical (VAWTs) decentralized generation systems, both in urban remote rural areas. The goals this study are improve Savonius-type VAWT’s efficiency oscillation. main concept is redesign a Novel Blade profile using Taguchi Robust Design Method ANSYS-Fluent simulation package. convex contour blade faces against wind, creating sufficient lift force minimizing drag force; concave up improving or maintaining force. result that improves performance by 65% over Savonius type at best angular position. addition, it decreases oscillation noise accordingly. This achieved its two goals.
